Today we will look at some artists who work in primarily portraiture and learn some tips and pointers on taking great photographs. Remember*

-have a theme

-Set a schedule

-Be prepared

-Post at least 4 Portraits

You cannot complete this assignment until you have taken at least 25 portraits on the digital camera and saved them in your folder – the more pictures you take, the better results you will get. You will be turning in your 4 BEST portraits for this assignment. Criteria 1. Create a series of portraits
2. All photos that you use for this assignment MUST be originals of yours that you took with a digital camera this semester.
3. Your 3 portraits must be part of a series and have a theme (either compositional style or subject matter or both.)
4. You must digitally change the images using one or more of the techniques you learned in tutorial #1 (cropping, change the color, adjust the levels – make sure the change or changes that you make enhance your photo making it a better composition or more eye-catching in some way.)
5. Always save your images in your personal folder under documents(just in case!!)
6. Turn your portraits into the shared folder for our class in the PORTRAITS folder. Create a folder with your name on it and save your 4 portraits into that folder. Examples of good portraits

Good morning, I hope you are all well rested and ready for another wonderful week. Last class we went on a paparazzi jaunt and photographed the senior dance class. Today you must look through your images and post the best image (can be altered in photoshop) I would also like you to add more and comment on the experience (it doesn't have to be long, just comment)

We will be talking about portraiture for the next little while.
AFTER Prom you will hav ethe opportunity to take photos in the small auditorium where we will have some
time to work with light and shadow. Tom Hoops creates dynamic images using high contrast and interesting perspectives.

His thoughts: Not much to tell you really. I like faces I like people and I try and capture them wherever they are.

Good morning,
VERY last day to hand in assignments or you will receive and "I" package.
Today I am going to talk about taking good pictures.

Headroom:
Leave enough space for the subject's head. Too low in the frame (too much space) may make your subject seem short. Not enough headroom makes them appear tall and scrunched. Correct headroom gives the subject just enough space to make them look comfortable.

Eye Placement:
Should be in the top of the screen (rule of thirds). You want the viewer not to notice the camera-work, so make it look natural and standard.

Avoid Distraction:
Don't cut people off at the neck, or forget about body parts.

Give "look space"- walking room:
This is in the frame that is in front of their eyes that allows them room to look or walk. So they don't look like they will bump into the edge of the photograph.

Colour and Abstracts
COLOUR
Colour has a dramatic effect on how the viewer percieves and experiences a photographic image.

Cool colours (blues, greens, -any image with a bluish tint) come across as emotionally distant, calm and professional (think of the IBM logo)

Warm colours (reds, oranges, --any image with a yellowish tint) come across as friendly, warm,lively, (think fast food logos) and they usually have a happier feeling.

Colour techniques:
colour contrast-complimentary colour: Colours opposite each other on the colour wheel are called complimentary.
Colour harmony: colours that are close to eachother on the colour wheel
colour discord: colours that seem wierd and out of place.
colour spot: one small area of colour that is in contrast with the rest of the colours
monochramatic colour: an images that has shades of primarily one colour throughout. This can be boring but usually the subtle hues of one colour give a feeling of peace.
Primary colours: Images that have all three of the primary colours: red, yellow, blue

ABSTRACT

common subject viewed ina unusual way: move in close. Shoot only part of the subject.
Reflections: Use reflections in glass etc to distort the image
Camera movement: Try zooming or moving your camera during a long exposure (1/30 or 1/15)
Patterns in Nature: look for repetition in shape and texture. Look for good lighting  to highlite the patterns and textures.
Manmade patterns: Buldings or structures, roads, fences using repetition of shape.
Shadows: Shadow can create striking abstract images. Look for interplay between light and shadow to create a dramatic composition.
