AFTER Prom you will hav ethe opportunity to take photos in the small auditorium where we will have some
time to work with light and shadow. Tom Hoops creates dynamic images using high contrast and interesting perspectives.

His thoughts: Not much to tell you really. I like faces I like people and I try and capture them wherever they are.

Good morning,
VERY last day to hand in assignments or you will receive and "I" package.
Today I am going to talk about taking good pictures.

Headroom:
Leave enough space for the subject's head. Too low in the frame (too much space) may make your subject seem short. Not enough headroom makes them appear tall and scrunched. Correct headroom gives the subject just enough space to make them look comfortable.

Eye Placement:
Should be in the top of the screen (rule of thirds). You want the viewer not to notice the camera-work, so make it look natural and standard.

Avoid Distraction:
Don't cut people off at the neck, or forget about body parts.

Give "look space"- walking room:
This is in the frame that is in front of their eyes that allows them room to look or walk. So they don't look like they will bump into the edge of the photograph.

Colour and Abstracts
COLOUR
Colour has a dramatic effect on how the viewer percieves and experiences a photographic image.

Cool colours (blues, greens, -any image with a bluish tint) come across as emotionally distant, calm and professional (think of the IBM logo)

Warm colours (reds, oranges, --any image with a yellowish tint) come across as friendly, warm, lively, (think fast food logos) and they usually have a happier feeling.

Colour techniques:
colour contrast-complimentary colour: Colours opposite each other on the colour wheel are called complimentary.
Colour harmony: colours that are close to eachother on the colour wheel
colour discord: colours that seem wierd and out of place.
colour spot: one small area of colour that is in contrast with the rest of the colours
monochramatic colour: an images that has shades of primarily one colour throughout. This can be boring but usually the subtle hues of one colour give a feeling of peace.
Primary colours: Images that have all three of the primary colours: red, yellow, blue

ABSTRACT

common subject viewed ina unusual way: move in close. Shoot only part of the subject.
Reflections: Use reflections in glass etc to distort the image
Camera movement: Try zooming or moving your camera during a long exposure (1/30 or 1/15)
Patterns in Nature: look for repetition in shape and texture. Look for good lighting  to highlite the patterns and textures.
Manmade patterns: Buldings or structures, roads, fences using repetition of shape.
Shadows: Shadow can create striking abstract images. Look for interplay between light and shadow to create a dramatic composition.

ASSIGNMENT:
*three shots using different colour techniques
*three shots using different abstract techniques

Ansel Adams

Take a look at Ansel Adams photographs and notice the tonal changes from the light whites to greys, mid-tonal grey and black-blacks. Try to aim for this contrast in your photography. Use regular camera settings and make it black and white in Photoshop--remember curves, brightness and contrast just ot 'bump' up the difference :)

here is an email I was sent:....Anyone interested :)
Hi, Anna
The Community Clean-Up is on April 16th from 10 - 12/ 12:30 PM. . . .  starting from Riverside Park.
Lorne Clarke was originally going to take some photos for us 'highlighting the Green Events' . . .  but he will be out of the province that weekend  - working.
Sooo, do you know of any excellent senior photography students who would be willing to come to Riverside Park at  11:45ish to take some photos of
'green event' -  minimal waste/local food features:
Examples:  colorful signs showing the food scrap and compost buckets
people using real dishes for drinks
                  cloth napkins
local smokies sizzling on the BBQ
locally made buns (with local flour)
                  people enjoying the food/ BBQing
The Green Event Sandwich Board sign
These photos would need to be in as high a resolution as possible . . . we will be using them for a display later.
If a student is interested in doing this . . .   he/she could possibly earn some community involvement hours at school  if  they still have that requirement for graduation?
Free sausage, bun, and hot chocolate for the student, too :)

Contrast continued with Ansel Adams

We discussed the importance of contrast in both black and white photography.
We looked at activist and nature photographer Ansel Adams. Today we will continue
Ansel Adams-

Timeline- Ansel Easton Adams born on February 20, at 114 Maple Street, San Francisco, the only child of Olive and Charles
1915 - Despises the regimentation of a regular education, and is taken out of school. For that year, his father buys him a season pass to the Panama-Pacific Exposition, which he visits nearly every day. Private tutors provide further instruction.
1916: Family Trip to Yosemite, Californina.
1925:
Decides to become a pianist. Buys a grand piano.
1927:
First acknowledged photograph.
1940 - Teaches first Yosemite workshop, the U. S. Camera Photographic Forum, in Yosemite with Edward Weston.
1953 he collaborated with Dorothea Lange on a Life commission for a photo essay on the Mormons in Utah
In 1962 Adams moved to Carmel, California, where in 1967 he was instrumental in the foundation of the Friends of Photography
1984 - Dies April 22 of heart failure aggravated by cancer

Interesting fact?
Adams was born in San Francisco, California in an upper-class family. When he was four, he was tossed face-first into a garden wall in an aftershock from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, breaking his nose. His nose was never repaired and appeared crooked for his entire life.

what elements do you see in the following Ansel Adam photographs?
